In 1818, the German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel accepted an offer to take over the chair of philosophy at the University of Berlin. For the remaining thirteen years of his life, particularly after the publication of his Naturrecht und Staatswissenschaft im Grundrisse (1821), he devoted himself almost entirely to lecturing. It is mainly from the notes of his students during this period that various editors later compiled and published him important works on aesthetics, philosophy of religion, and philosophy of history.
The notes in this manuscript document Hegel's lectures on the history of philosophy, delivered in Berlin in the winter of 1829-1830. The manuscript is unsigned, and is very neatly and carefully written, suggesting that it was copied by a student from his own notes.
