Initially founded to provide music at weekly University religious events and at convocations, choral offerings at the University of Chicago expanded during the mid-twentieth century to include a variety of organizations, ranging in size from small groups to large choruses. Housed in the Department of Music, the ensembles presented concerts featuring a wide repertoire of both sacred and secular music. The Department also sponsored organ recitals and carillon concerts, following the installation of the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Carillon in 1932.
Of particular note in this collection are the programs from the ceremonies laying the cornerstone of Rockefeller Memorial Chapel in June 1926 and the dedication ceremony of the Chapel in October 1928. The program from the dedication ceremony includes transcripts of speeches given by President Charles Max Mason and John D. Rockefeller Jr.
The collection is organized chronologically by academic year. It is arranged in three series:
Series I: Choir programs
Series II: Choral programs and publicity
Series III: Oversize items
Series I contains bound copies of programs from University Chapel services and University convocations.
Series II contains programs, press clippings, posters, tour announcements, and expense reports for the University Chorus, Rockefeller Chapel Choir, Bond Chapel Choir, Motet Choir and University Women’s Chorus, as well as organ recitals and carillonneur concerts.
Series III contains oversize posters and clippings.
