Historical Note

The American Indian Business Association of Chicago and the Midwest was linked to a consortium of 9 or 10 Illinois Indian organizations. This body was designated as the Administrative Unit. Consortium members appointed a representative to the Consortium Board. Board members had to be of Native American descent and to reside or be employed in the region. Consortium Board meetings were held (for the most part) at least once every thirty days.

Established in Chicago in 1974, NAES College (Native American Educational Service) aimed to improve the leadership of Native communities and to ensure that tribal knowledge, traditions and values play a major role in the higher education of Native students. Before closing its doors in 2007, NAES College offered a single degree, a Bachelor's of Arts in General Studies with an emphasis in Public Policy, and tribal knowledge, community service, community development and leadership.

Scope Note

The largest part of the collection is made up of the documents associated with the AIBA Consortium Board Meetings (including Agendas, Minutes, Status Reports, Statistical Reports, Fiscal Reports, and Old and New Business). Most Board Meetings between June 1977 and November 1984 are accounted for, with some exceptions (including all of 1983 and much of 1984). In addition, some letters, papers, advertisements and reports from NAES, external Job Training Partnerships, state and federal government reports, media organizations, and other Indian Organizations, external to NAES, are included.
