Historical Note

The New Testament Club of the University of Chicago Divinity School was established during the 1892-93 academic year. Meetings were held fortnightly and organized around a theme chosen for the academic year. Originally the membership was restricted to members of the faculty and fellows; later membership included graduate students, and after 1907, any members of the University community interested in New Testament scholarship. Views were exchanged and individual research often given further impetus by the meetings.

It was at a New Testament Club meeting in 1920 that Professor E. J. Goodspeed read a paper on modern translations of the New Testament; during the ensuing discussion the suggestion was made that Professor Goodspeed undertake his own translation -- hence the origin of the New Testament: An American Translation. During the 1920's and 1930's members of the Club were active in the study of the biblical manuscript collection which the University was actively acquiring. In addition to fostering intra-departmental communication, the Club sponsored a number of distinguished guest speakers, many of whose presentations have been summarized in the minutes of the meetings.

Scope Note

The Records contain correspondence, manuscripts, programs, membership lists, minutes, announcements, and letters of tribute. Also include are writings on the founding and history of the Club.

There are no written records of the New Testament Club prior to 1894 in this collection. The earliest minutes, taken by E.J. Goodspeed, date from October, 1895 and no minutes have been preserved for the academic year 1897-98. In addition to the printed programs--the first being that of 1894-95--the collection contains a number of annotated cards giving program information on meetings prior to 1894, as well as information for those years when no programs were printed, e.g., 1917-18.
