University of Chicago. Board of Trustees. Presidential Search Committees. Records, [Box #, Folder #], Hanna Holborn Gray Special Collections Research Center, University of Chicago Library
Presidential Search Committees are formed periodically through the Board of Trustees, following or in anticipation of the end of the current president's administration. Faculty members and trustees form the committee, which elects a new president from a pool of nominees, taking into account the suggestions and recommendations of the University of Chicago community as well as individuals and groups outside the university.
In 1945, the title of the chief executive officer of the University of Chicago was changed from "President" to "Chancellor." The title of the chief executive officer was changed back to "President" in 1961, during George W. Beadle's administration.
The records of the Presidential Search Committees contain 3.25 linear feet of material, spanning the years 1950 to 1977. Each series in the collection contains material pertaining to the proceedings of individual search committees. Series I contains material from the 1951 search resulting in the election of Lawrence Kimpton. Series II contains material from the search conducted from 1960 to 1961, resulting in the election of George Beadle. Series III contains material from the 1975 search resulting in the election of John Wilson. Series IV contains material from the 1977 search resulting in the election of Hanna Gray. Series I, II, and IV contain considerably less material than the more extensive records in Series III.
This collection does not contain material related to the search which resulted in the election of Edward H. Levi, who served as President from 1968 to 1975. Reference to Levi's resignation is found in Series III.
Series III, subseries 4 contains biographical material and publications of individual nominees which pre-date the 1975 presidential search. Series III, subseries I; and Series IV contain facsimiles of material from previous searches, which were used for reference during search proceedings.
The material in the collection includes minutes and agenda from committee meetings, organizational correspondence and letters of recommendation, biographical material and publications of nominees, University and committee publications, University press releases, financial and organizational material, notes, and ephemera.
