Biographical Note

Lloyd and Susanne Rudolph were professors of political science at the University of Chicago and close collaborators throughout their careers. The couple specialized in South Asian politics, history, and culture, and in 2014 were joint recipients of the Padma Bhushan Award, one of India’s highest civilian honors.

Lloyd Irving Rudolph was born November 1, 1927 in Chicago to Norman Charles Rudolph and Bertha Margolin Rudolph. Lloyd grew up in Chicago and Elgin, Illinois, graduating from Elgin High School in 1944. He earned an A.B. in Government from Harvard College in 1948, a Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government in 1950, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Harvard University in 1956.

Susanne Hoeber Rudolph was born April 3, 1930 in Mannheim, Germany to Johannes Höber and Elfriede Fischer Höber. Her family fled Nazi Germany in 1939 and settled in Philadelphia where Susanne’s grandfather, Rudolf Höber, was a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Susanne earned a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College in 1951, an M.A. from Harvard in 1953, and a Ph.D. from Radcliffe College in 1955.

Lloyd and Susanne met at Harvard and were married July 19, 1952. Together, they had three children: Jenny (b. 1962), Amelia (b. 1963), and Matthew (b. 1968).

In 1956, the young couple drove a Land Rover from Austria to New Delhi for their first research trip in India. This trip marked the beginning of decades of fieldwork in India for the Rudolphs. They lived and researched in India approximately every four years throughout their adult lives.

Lloyd’s early career included two stints as a group leader for a summer camp, Experiment in International Living, in France in 1948 and 1951. From 1948 to 1949, he was a research assistant to Bertram Gross, the Executive Director of the Council of Economic Advisers in the Executive Office of the President. In 1949, Lloyd was an administrative assistant to Emil J. Sady, Chief of the Pacific Branch of the Office of Territories in the Department of the Interior.

While at Harvard, Lloyd worked as a teaching fellow for the Department of Government, 1951-1954. He served as a First Lieutenant, U.S.A., in the Adjutant General’s Corps from 1954 to 1956. He returned to Harvard’s Department of Government as an instructor in 1957, and in 1960 Lloyd was the Allston Burr senior tutor at Dunster House.

Susanne’s early career also began in the Department of Government at Harvard, where she taught from 1953 to 1963.

The Rudolphs’ teaching careers at the University of Chicago began in 1964 when both were appointed Associate Professors of Political Science in the Department of Political Science and the College. Lloyd was also an Associate Professor in the Social Sciences. They were both promoted to Professor in 1972. Susanne was named the William Benton Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Political Science and the College in 1990. In 2002, Lloyd retired from the University of Chicago and Susanne was named the William Benton Distinguished Service Professor Emerita of Political Science.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Susanne served in many high-level administrative roles at the University of Chicago. She was Associate Dean of the College and Master of the Social Science Collegiate Division from 1973 to 1975. She chaired the Department of Political Science from 1976 to 1979 and again in 1989. Susanne directed the South Asia Language and Area Center from 1980 to 1998. She also served as Director of the Institute for Culture and Consciousness in South Asia from 1990 to 1994. From 2001 to 2002, Susanne was Acting Director of the Center for International Studies.

Susanne also took on several prominent leadership positions outside of the University of Chicago. She was President of the Association for Asian Studies in 1986 and was President of the American Political Science Association from 2003 to 2004. She was also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Lloyd chaired several academic programs at the University of Chicago during his career, including The College Political Science Program (1968-1970), The Master of Arts Program in the Social Sciences (1973-1975), the Committee on International Relations (1985-1987; 1994-1995), South Asian Studies in The College (1985-2002), and Public Policy Studies in The College (1997-1998).

Additionally, Lloyd was an active member of the American Political Science Association, the Association for Asian Studies, and the Council on Foreign Relations in New York and Chicago. He consulted for many organizations including the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Foreign Service Institute of the Department of State, the World Bank, and the U.S. Institute for Peace.

The Rudolphs received several honors throughout their research and teaching careers. Susanne earned the University of Chicago’s Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 1973, and Lloyd earned the Faculty Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching in 1999. In 2003, the Rudolphs’ colleagues at the University of Chicago convened a three-day conference in their honor titled “Area Studies Redux: Situating Knowledge in a Globalizing World.” The American Political Science Association awarded them the 2009 Blade of Grass Award in honor of their contributions to interpretive studies of the political world. The Rudolphs received the Padma Bhushan Award in 2014.

Lloyd and Susanne Rudolph co-authored numerous articles and books together. Their books include:

• The Modernity of Tradition (1967)

• Education and Politics in India (co-editors, 1972)

• The Regional Imperative: The Administration of U.S. Foreign Policy Towards South Asian States (co-editors and contributing authors, 1980, reissued in 2007)
