Bruce Sagan owned the Hyde Park Herald from 1956 to 2000, and acquired these records upon the sale of the newspaper. Sagan moved to Hyde Park in 1946 to start his undergraduate degree at the University of Chicago, but never finished the degree, spending the vast majority of his time writing for the Chicago Maroon rather than attending class. Sagan bought the Hyde Park Herald in the early 1950s, saving it from bankruptcy, and tried to develop a strong local paper. When Sagan retired in 2022, he transferred the Herald to a nonprofit led by the South Side Weekly.
The collection contains both materials relating to the management and finances of the Herald and folders of editorial research relating to urban renewal and development in Hyde Park, Kenwood, and Woodlawn.
