Historical Note

The Carl Sandburg-Joseph Halle Schaffner Correspondence documents nearly fifty years of friendship between the two men. Joseph Halle Schaffner was the son of the founding partner of the Chicago clothiers, Hart, Schaffner and Marx, Joseph Schaffner, and his wife, Sarah Halle. The tie between Schaffner and Sandburg was reinforced through marriages. Sandburg's daughter, Helga, married the widower of Schaffner's cousin, Jane Halle.

Scope Note

The collection is arranged in two parts: The Carl Sandburg-Joseph Halle Schaffner Correspondence and the Sandburg Memorabilia of Joseph Halle Schaffner. The correspondence, arranged in chronological order, extends from 1927 to Sandburg's death in 1967. Included in the collection are letters from or accounts of mutual friends, especially persons affiliated with the New School of Social Research, which conferred degrees upon Schaffner and Sandburg in 1959. Among the major correspondencts are Roy Stannard Baker, L. C. Brodribb, Alvin Johnson, David M. Kirkpatrick, Henry Adams Lafarge, Clara Anderson Sandburg and Hans Simon.

The Sandburg Memorabilia of Joseph Halle Schaffner, also arranged in chronological order, consist mostly of newspaper clippings. Issues of magazines, pamphlets, and special publications are itemized in the Inventory.
