Marcel Schein, born in Czechoslovakia in 1902, was educated at the University of Vienna, the University of Wurzburg, and the University of Zurich, where he received his Ph.D. magna cum laude. After teaching in several European universities, he emigrated to the United States in 1938. In that year, he was appointed a research associate in the Department of Physics at the University of Chicago. In 1946, he was appointed professor of physics and a member of the staff of the Institute for Nuclear Studies, until his death in 1960. His major field of research was in the investigation of cosmic rays.
The Marcel Schein Papers primarily consist of proposals, reports, manuscripts, notes, diagrams and articles pertaining to Schein's research into cosmic rays during the 1940s and 1950. It is organized into nine series: Series I General Files; Series II Proposals; Series III Reports; Series IV Notes and Diagrams; Series V Notebooks and Research Albums; Series VI Drafts and Manuscripts; Series VII Published Articles and Books; and Series VIII Audio-Visual.
Series I, General Files, consists of general files, including awards, correspondence, and a list of conferences that Schein participated in.
Series II, Proposals, consists of research and budget proposals.
Series III, Reports, contains reports submitted by Schein to various organizations, including the United States Navy and the University of Chicago.
Series IV, Notes and Diagrams, consists of undated fragmentary drafts, research notes, photographs of equipment, diagrams and graphs.
Series V, Notebooks and Research Albums, consists of two research notebooks and four research albums containing graphs, diagrams and photographs. Each research album was removed from their original binders and placed into folders.
Series VI, Drafts and Manuscripts, consists of manuscripts and corrected drafts of various articles and reports.
Series VII, Published Articles and Books, contains some of Schein's published articles and books. Also included in this series are galley proofs and reprints.
Series VIII, Audio-Visual, consists of photographs of equipment, graphs and diagrams directly related to research, and various photographs not directly pertaining to Schein's research. The graphs and diagrams are included in this series because they were originally filed with the equipment photographs. Two collections of non-research photographs, the Balloon Photograph Album and the Mount McKinley Album, were removed from their original binders and placed in folders. Also contained within this collection are glass plate photographs pertaining to Schein's Expedition to Mount Elbrus, and six reels of 16mm film covering cosmic ray experiments in Guam, the Caribbean, and Stagg Field at the University of Chicago.
