Biographical Note

James Truran (1940-2022) was an American astrophysicist. He received his bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in 1961 and his PhD from Yale University in 1966. From 1973 to 1991 he was professor of astronomy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and was then professor at the University of Chicago in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics. Truran’s area of research interest was in theoretical nuclear astrophysics. In his dissertation, he addressed nuclear reaction rates in the context of supernova explosions, which among other things led to the prediction of the generation of the nickel isotope 56 in supernova explosions, the radioactive decay of which dominates the light curves of type Ia supernovae after the explosion.
