What Item Status Means

The following chart describes the various item statuses users may see in the Library Catalog as well as what action to take if you wish to use an item. 

Search results preview of item status

In the search results, an item's status will be previewed as either Available or Unavailable. To view the specific item status (as well as links to request the item where appropriate), click through to the full record.

If the title is a series or has multiple volumes or parts, its status will not be listed. Click through to the full record to view the item status of specific items within the series.

Full record view of item status

The full record view of a title will display item status under "Holdings." For titles with many volumes, you may need to click on "View more items" to view the item status of the specific volume you want.

Status* Means... If you want the item...
Available Item should be available at its specified location. Proceed to the location and look for the item on the shelf or, for restricted collections, request the item from staff. For more information about the location, click the "Map/Guide" link next to location.

For items in Mansueto, click on the "Request from Mansueto Library" link next to the item/volume. For detailed instructions, see "Requesting Mansueto Items"

For items in the Special Collections Research Center, use the "Request from SCRC" link next to the desired item.

Can't find it?

If you can't find the item on the shelf, ask at the nearest circulation desk or place an online search request.

To place a search request, click on the "Can't find it?" link in the Library Catalog record for the missing item. The item's information will be filled out automatically. You will just need to provide your contact information.

Library staff will search for the missing item and contact you via email with the results of the search. If located, we will hold the item for you at the circulation desk for that location.

Flagged for Reserve Item is needed for course reserve. Ask at the nearest circulation desk when the item will be available for short-term loan (typically between two and 24 hours).

You may also click on the "BorrowDirect" or "UBorrow" link to search for an available copy at one of our partner libraries if you want a longer loan period.
In Process Item is in the Library but needs further processing before it can be shelved. Click on the "BorrowDirect" or "UBorrow" link to search for an available copy at one of our partner libraries, or click on the "Recall this" link and follow the prompts.

Items typically arrive via BorrowDirect and UBorrow in 4-5 days; recalled "In Process" items may be available anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the stage of processing.

You will be notified when the item is available.
In Transit Item was returned to a library other than its "home" library and is en route to its destination. Click on the "Recall this" link and follow the prompts, or click on the "BorrowDirect" or "UBorrow" link to search for an available copy at one of our partner libraries.

Recalled "In Transit" items are normally available within 1-2 days; items typically arrive via BorrowDirect and UBorrow in 4-5 days.

You will be notified when the item is available.
In Transit for Hold Item requested by a patron was returned to a library other than its pickup location and is en route to its destination, at which point it will be placed on hold for that patron. Click on the "BorrowDirect" or "UBorrow" link to search for an available copy at one of our partner libraries, or click on the "Recall this" link and follow the prompts.

Items typically arrive via BorrowDirect and UBorrow in 4-5 days; recalled "In Transit for Hold" items will be loaned to the patron or patrons before you in the request queue once they arrive at their pickup location. Each patron has seven days to pick up an item before their request expires; once loaned, each patron will receive a 7 day loan if the item has other outstanding requests. It will therefore likely be at least two weeks or more before the recalled item is available.

You will be notified when the item is available.
Loaned Item has been borrowed by a user. Click on the "BorrowDirect" or "UBorrow" link to search for an available copy at one of our partner libraries or click on the "Recall this" link and follow the prompts.

Items typically arrive via BorrowDirect and UBorrow in 4-5 days; recalled items are normally returned within 8 days. You will be notified when the item is available.

EXCEPTION: Items on course reserve and other short term loans are ineligible for recall, but you may click on the "BorrowDirect" or "UBorrow" link to search for an available copy at one of our partner libraries.
Lost Item is long overdue and has been billed as lost. Click on the "BorrowDirect" or "UBorrow" link to search for an available copy at one of our partner libraries.

Items typically arrive via BorrowDirect and UBorrow in 4-5 days.
Missing Item cannot be located by Library staff. Click on the "BorrowDirect" or "UBorrow" link to search for an available copy at one of our partner libraries.

Items typically arrive via BorrowDirect and UBorrow in 4-5 days.

If you feel the Library should replace the missing copy, you may place a purchase request.
On Hold Item is being held for another user. Click on the "BorrowDirect" or "UBorrow" link to search for an available copy at one of our partner libraries, or click on the "Recall this" link and follow the prompts.

Items typically arrive via BorrowDirect and UBorrow in 4-5 days; recalled "On Hold" items will be loaned to the patron or patrons before you in the request queue before being place on hold for you. On Order Item has been ordered but has not yet been received. Click on the "BorrowDirect" or "UBorrow" link to search for an available copy at one of our partner libraries, or click on the "Recall this" link and follow the prompts.

Items typically arrive via BorrowDirect and UBorrow in 4-5 days; recalled "On Order" items may not be available for several weeks, depending on when the Library receives them.

You will be notified when the item is available.

If the "On Order" item does not display a "recall this" link, you may ask for assistance at any reference desk.
Recently returned Item has been returned to its home Library in the last day and may be in the process of reshelving. Look for the item on shelf, since it may have already been reshelved. If you can't find it, ask at the nearest circulation desk and staff will search for the item. Depending on time and staffing levels, staff may request patrons to return later after the search is conducted.

For items in Mansueto, ask at the Mansueto Circulation desk or check back later to request the item once it becomes available for request.
Retrieving from Mansueto An item in Mansueto has been requested and the automated storage system robot is in the process of bringing the item to a service desk. Ask at the nearest circulation desk.
Declared Lost Item is long missing and has been declared lost by Library staff. Click on the "BorrowDirect" or "UBorrow" link to search for an available copy at one of our partner libraries.

Items typically arrive via BorrowDirect and UBorrow in 4-5 days.

If you feel the Library should replace the lost copy, you may place a purchase request.
Unavailable Item is not available to users. Click on the "BorrowDirect" or "UBorrow" link to search for an available copy at one of our partner libraries.

Items typically arrive via BorrowDirect and UBorrow in 4-5 days.

If you feel the Library should replace the unavailable copy, you may place a purchase request.
Withdrawn Item has been withdrawn from the Library's collections. Click on the "BorrowDirect" or "UBorrow" link to search for an available copy at one of our partner libraries.

Items typically arrive via BorrowDirect and UBorrow in 4-5 days.

If you feel the Library should replace the unavailable copy, you may place a purchase request.
