About the Symposium

7th Biennial Kathleen A. Zar Symposium
September 14-16, 2023

Invisible Labor in Astronomy

Organized to coincide with the installation of "Untold History of Women at Yerkes Observatory, 1900–1930," a library exhibition, the Capturing the Stars interdisciplinary research group at the University of Chicago is organizing this conference. Astronomers, historians of science and photography, librarians, archivists, and scholars of science and technology studies will come together to present on varied topics related to under-acknowledged labor in the production of astronomical research.

The symposium and library exhibition are generously supported by the Kathleen and Howard Zar Science Fund, the Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society, The John Crerar Foundation, The Institute on the Formation of Knowledge and the University of Chicago Women's Board. Registration for the symposium is free.

An optional pre-conference trip to Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay, Wisconsin is planned for Wednesday, September 13. There will be a fee of $42.63. Lunch, admission to the Yerkes Observatory, and transportation are included.
