Introduction
Chicago jazz history and
how jazz came to Chicago as
part of the Great Migration are popular topics for school projects and
history competitions. Every year the Chicago Jazz Archive gets
calls and emails from students and parents all over the U.S., asking
for materials and interviews for
these projects. Because of the nature of its research mission and
collections, the Chicago Jazz Archive cannot honor these requests on an
individual basis. The Archive's Curator has prepared these web
resources to help student researchers get started on their projects, but
the actual research should take place at local libraries.
For Chicago area students, the Chicago Public Library's
Harold Washington Library is the place to start any project on Chicago
jazz or Chicago history -- especially the
Chicago Metro History Fair --
because it has extensive collections on Chicago history and
a good jazz history collection. The Harold Washington Library has reference
librarians trained to help students with their projects, and CPL has a
special suite of webpages for the History Fair, including a very helpful
History Fair Gallery, and an introduction to using databases. After visiting the Library, the
Chicago History Museum may be another good place to do research.
