Scope Note

The Altscheler Collection of Photographs of Kentucky primarily consists of negatives of photographs taken by Brent Altscheler of historical sites in Kentucky between 1921 and 1932. Also included in the collection are positives, manuscript notes, newspaper clippings and postcards. The bulk of the material dates between 1921 and 1925.

This collection was created by Brent A. Altscheler, a member of the Kentucky Filson Club, in the 1920s. A partial list of counties in which Altscheler took photographs includes: Harrison, Barren, Bourbon, Clark, Jefferson, Lincoln, Mercer, Monroe, Shelby, Spencer, and Woodford. Some towns contained within this collection are: Danville, Glascow, Harrodsburg, Frankfort, Louisville, Lexington, Middletown and Taylorville.

The collection was originally housed within nine photographic packets with an index written on each individual packet. This order was maintained, but contents were transferred to individual envelopes and the envelopes were then filed with the packets. The numbering on the envelopes corresponds to the original numbering on the packets.
