Ann Feldman’s Singing and Early Career

Ann Feldman was a professional singer from 1971-1988. She was trained as a cantorial soloist by Cantor Abraham Lubin (Congregation Rodfei Zedek, Chicago) and sang at Temple Sholom, Temple Solel, Jewish Reconstructionist Synagogue, and many others. Feldman was also a soloist for composers Max Janowski and Herman Berlinski; and was a soloist at Winnetka Congregational Church.

Dr. Feldman produced the first recording combining Ruth Crawford Seeger’s contemporary, blues, and folk music for “Music of Ruth Crawford Seeger” (Musical Heritage Society, 1985). That recording featured Chicago Symphony clarinetists Larry Combs and John Bruce Yeh, Lyric Opera oboist Robert Morgan and cellist Barbara Haffner, and pianist Abraham Stokman. Ann Feldman was the featured singer on the recording.

Ann sang the lead role in Cimarosa’s opera “The Secret Marriage” at the Chicago Cultural Center. She was also a sought-after soloist to premiere contemporary works of composers Shulamit Ran, Robert Lombardo and many others. Dr. Feldman’s expertise included lecture recitals about women composers’ music and their lives, and Baroque music.

Noteworthy Women

The Noteworthy Women radio series is a 10-program radio series designed to celebrate Women’s History Month. The first four programs were syndicated in 1995 by the WFMT Fine Arts Network to 196 national markets, reaching an Arbitron-estimated audience of 74,330,000 listeners. In March 1996, two new programs were syndicated by WFMT. Those programs reached 141 national markets and reached an Arbitron-estimated audience of 65,400,000. One of these programs, “Mexican Women Composers,” was also produced in Spanish and syndicated by Radio Bilingue in California and Puerto Rico, Radio Esperanza in the Midwest, and Radio UNAM in Mexico. This program reached an Arbitron-estimated audience of 2,000,000. In 1997, a final set of four programs was completed. CNN covered the production of one of the programs, “Spider Saloff Sings Gershwin,” which was featured on the regular “All About Women” segment that reports on innovative projects and businesses undertaken by women all across the nation. The report was broadcast three times in early June and was picked up by several stations elsewhere.

The programs were:

Composing Women – with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Shulamit Ran and historian Dr. Susan McClary

Women in the Shadows – featuring composers Fanny Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann with scholar Dr. Nancy Reich

Mrs. H.H.A. Beach – focusing on this famous American composer and her biographer, Dr. Adrienne Fried Block

African American Women Composers – with blues artist KoKo Taylor, scholar Dr. Helen Walker-Hill, and composer Regina Harris Baiocchi

Mexican Women Composers – taped on location in Mexico City and at the Guanajuato Festival Cervantino (additional Spanish version)

Kronos in America – featuring violinist David Harrington (Kronos), Abraham Loft (scholar and violinist) with composers Julia Wolfe, Lois V. Vierk, Bunita Marcus, Eleanor Hovda, and Wendy Carlos

The Musical Bridge: China and the U.S.–based on a live concert at Northwestern University with composers Chen Yi and Bun-Ching Lam. Winner of the Radio Shanghai Special Jury Award. Also filmed and syndicated in the U.S. and China by AATV Asian American TV.

Spider Saloff Sings Gershwin–based on a live concert at the Chicago Cultural Center by jazz artist Spider Saloff and with an interview with Frankie Gershwin Godowsky, George and Ira Gershwin’s sister.

Sisters in Jazz – based on a live concert at the Chicago Cultural Center by jazz pianists Marian McPartland and Judy Roberts.

Unbreakable Spirits

Unbreakable Spirits was a twelve-part radio series produced by Artistic Circles that showcased China’s emerging women musical and performance artists. It was one of the first national radio series about women and girls in China. The Chicago Artists International Program, City of Chicago, and City of Shenyang, China sponsored Dr. Feldman’s trip to China in 1997, along with audio engineer Janice Thompson, to record the music and stories of China’s women and girls.

First aired on WBEZ’s program Eight-Forty-Eight in March 1999, the station “received more phone calls and e-mails from listeners than we have for any other single segment so far,” said Tish Valva, Executive Producer, Eight-Forty-Eight, WBEZ-FM Chicago. In March 2000, the Unbreakable Spirits series was syndicated and aired on Public Radio International.

The twelve, hour-long radio programs included:

Pop Music and Sensuality

COBRA – China Rocks!

A Manchu Wedding

Anti-Japanese Protest Songs

Bridging China and Japan

Tibetan Songs – Traditional to Pop

Female Buddhist Monk

Conducting the Cultural Revolution

A Daughter’s View

The Golden Flute

Tang Dynasty Today

The Unbreakable Spirits Series received the “Special Jury Award” for the radio program “Bridging China & Japan” from the Seventh International Radio Shanghai Music Festival in 1999 and for “Anti-Japanese Protest Songs” (also nominated for a Peabody Award). Ann Feldman, PhD, was awarded the Gracie Allen Award in 2000 from the Foundation for American Women in Radio and Television for the radio program “Conducting the Cultural Revolution.”

Ties that Bind (Media)

Ties That Bind is a video documentary and peace project that brought together Chicago’s Jewish, Christian, and Muslim communities through their female spiritual leaders. The hour-long video documentary records the conversations and experience of a group of these leaders and their African American, Latino, Muslim, and Anglo communities who joined the discussion. In 2004, the documentary premiered at the UNESCO and the Parliament of the World’s Religions “Pathways to Peace” conference in Barcelona and was distributed internationally by National Educational Television Association (NETA) for public television in 2006. The documentary was nominated for an Emmy award, won the Aurora Film Gold Medal Award, received honorable mentions from Accolade and Chris Awards, and was a Finalist for the National Broadcasting Society competition. Ann Feldman received the Y Women Leadership Award from the YWCA for her work with Ties That Bind.

According to Dr. Feldman, “Ties That Bind grew out of an opportunity created by the events of 9/11. While many people were paralyzed with fear after the attacks on New York and Washington, D.C., women leaders from around the world agreed to work with Artistic Circles on a project to connect diverse groups. Within a year, we realized that to build community relationships effectively and to document them, we needed to focus on local, grassroots efforts.”

With the aid of a discussion guide and video clips, Artistic Circles held town hall meetings across the United States. The goal of the town hall meetings was to shift the central focus of the conversation from religion to an even more basic human desire to connect—not to allow world events, the media, or fear to divide us. Feldman writes, “How does Ties That Bind help people connect? Again and again, we’ve seen individuals from ages 12 to 85 from widely different backgrounds open up about what they most fear and the prejudices they experience on a daily basis. This revelation happens once they see and hear the female spiritual leaders talk on video about their own fears and stereotypes.”

Since its release in 2006, Ties That Bind has been used in many different ways: at religious institutions, colleges, and high schools. It had also been discussed on a National Endowment for the Humanities panel and was the basis for a course at Northwestern University. Ties That Bind has been commercially released in Canada and shown on more than 150 Public Television Stations worldwide.

In July 2019, six female religious leaders featured in the documentary reunited to discuss the Ties That Bind us, despite the hatred, distrust, and fear in our world. Their message: Connect! “We aren’t so much divided as we are disconnected. So, connect, connect, connect!” The other message was to be more inclusive in this work and instead of “interfaith” name it “inter-community.”

Water Pressures

The video documentary Water Pressures was conceived when producer Ann Feldman, PhD, was trapped in a taxi on the way to the Bangalore, India airport. She was caught in the middle of the Cauvery River water riot in January 2007. The water crisis grabbed her attention, and she went back to India to meet with a leading water center in the Thar Desert. The Jal Bhagirathi Foundation and desert villagers agreed to collaborate with Artistic Circles.

In 2008, Artistic Circles filmed in several villages, learning about water scarcity and traditional solutions to the local water shortages. In 2008 and 2009, Artistic Circles sponsored a water forum along with Northwestern University, corporate partners from PepsiCo and IBM, and government leaders including Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL). Additional project partners were Archeworks, the Sehgal Foundation, and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust Dr. Feldman taught a course on Water Pressures at Northwestern University.

With help from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Artistic Circles created an exchange between students and faculty at Northwestern University and leaders at the Jal Bhagirathi Foundation. In March 2010, Northwestern University students and faculty and a video crew flew to India to meet villagers, engineers, and leaders to learn about water scarcity firsthand. Afterward, leaders from the Jal Bhagirathi Foundation flew to the U.S. to visit Northwestern’s campus and then to Washington, D.C. to meet with government leaders about global water issues.

Based on the film footage from the three visits, exchanges, and public events, Artistic Circles created the hour-long Water Pressures video documentary to show the power of international partnerships between communities about global water issues. The documentary highlighted people living in water scarcity (Thar Desert, India) and water abundance (Evanston, IL on the shores of Lake Michigan).

In 2013, the Water Pressures documentary aired on American Public TV (APT) to 82% of U.S. public TV stations. It also aired in India. John McLean Media syndicated the documentary internationally in Canada, Europe, and New Zealand. In that same year, Artistic Circles created and published the Water Pressures discussion guide, which along with video clips from the documentary, was used for educational outreach by the United Nations and PBS Learning Media, as well as colleges, universities, and high schools across the nation. The documentary was screened at educational events at Northwestern University and Columbia University Water Centre (April 2012).
