Bernard R. Berelson, scientist, professor. The Bernard R. Berelson Study of Graduate Education Papers are comprised of material gathered by Berelson in the course of his work. It includes written reports and letters from respondents; notes of interviews, and self-memoranda prepared by Berelson. The study was published as Graduate Education in the United States, McGraw-Hill, 1960.

Biographical Note

Bernard R. Berelson (1912-1979) was a Professor of the Behavioral Sciences at the University of Chicago.

Scope Note

In 1958, Bernard R. Berelson, Professor of the Behavioral Sciences at The University of Chicago, was asked to undertake a study of graduate education in American colleges and universities by the Carnegie Corporation. Questionnaires were sent to leading educators and scholars and a series of interviews were conducted. The study sought information regarding the current needs and directions of major academic disciplines, the nature of graduate study in these disciplines, and solicited the opinions of college and university administrators as to the adequacy of preparation in major fields of higher learning. This collection is comprised of material gathered by Mr. Berelson in the course of his work. It includes written reports and letters from respondents; notes of interviews, and self-memoranda prepared by Berelson. The study was published as Graduate Education in the United States, McGraw-Hill, 1960.

The collection also includes an unpublished review of educational testing which Mr. Berelson prepared in 1961 for the Carnegie Corporation.
