Scope Note

The documents in this volume relate to the planning and construction of the railroad built and operated by the Chicago and South Side Rapid Transit Company. The materials were assembled by D. L. Barnes. Many of the documents are letters among company employees. These discuss specifics about feasibility of the railroad, the different types of required equipment, and the logistics and costs of construction. The employees’ letters often argue about the best ways to construct and operate the train. The documents also include memoranda by engineers and architects. These estimate the cost of the gas and electricity required to power the trains. Some of the documents deal with balancing profitability and safety. One document lists the company’s engineers and their average speeds and stop times. Finally, the volume includes drawn diagrams of train components and two folded train blueprints.
