| Abstract: | Ramon Brewster Hoff (1935-2016) was a University of Chicago graduate and physicist. The Papers contain Hoff’s course notes, assignments, and exams, research notes, dissertation materials, published writings, and a collection of articles and lectures written by others. The bulk of the material dates from 1957 to 1969, during his doctoral study and research at the University of Chicago. |

Ramon (Ray) Brewster Hoff was born on June 25th, 1935 in Pennsylvania. Ramon Hoff received his A.B. in physics from Harvard University in 1957, S.M. in physics from the University of Chicago in 1958, and Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Chicago on September 4th, 1970, while teaching at DePaul University, Illinois. Hoff married Gloria Thelma Albuerne (1930-2003), another doctoral student in physics at the University of Chicago, and together they have two children. Ramon Hoff died on August 3rd, 2016 in Chicago, Illinois.
The Ramon B. Hoff Papers are organized into four series:
Series I: UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO
This series contains course notes, assignments, and exams from Hoff’s coursework, centering around 1957-1958, his first year of graduate school. It also contains Hoff’s thematically organized notes and papers related to his program of study. It also contains drafts, notes, lists of reference, and charts for Hoff’s doctoral dissertation titled “Baryon Coupling Regularities,” as well as a copy of the dissertation itself. The dissertation was orally defended on February 22nd, 1968, and provisionally accepted pending major revisions. The first subseries is organized chronologically and by course number.
Series II: RESEARCH NOTES
This series contains Hoff’s research notes, which are mostly manuscript and occasionally typed. The original organization of these notes has not been changed, and the titles of the original folders, when present, are preserved as well.
Series III: WRITINGS BY HOFF
This series contains research articles written by Hoff, either as single author or collaboratively with his wife. It also contains the editorial correspondence related to his 1969 article published in Physics Review Letters.
Series IV: WRITINGS BY OTHERS
This series contains research articles, conference proceedings, lectures, dissertations, and reports by others in Hoff’s papers, the vast majority of which are related to his own research. The exception is a 1959 article by Paul K. Alkon on the melody of speech, on which is handwritten “For Ramon & Thelma from Paul.” These writings are grouped by author last names or, on a few occasions and following Hoff’s own organization, by the name of the laboratory to which all authors are affiliated. The bulk of this series dates from the 1960s.
