| Abstract: | The Jury Project of the University of Chicago Law School was begun in the early fifties as part of an effort by the Law School to integrate the techniques of the social sciences into legal research. The Records contain case summaries, juror interviews, completed questionnaires, trial transcripts, reports, working papers, student papers, and audiotapes. |
The collection is open for research.
Series V, Audiotapes, does not include access copies for the audio recordings. Researchers will need to consult with staff before requesting these items.

The Jury Project of the University of Chicago Law School was begun in the early 1950s as part of an effort by the Law School to integrate the techniques of the social sciences into legal research. The project was funded primarily by the Ford Foundation.
The Jury Project Records contain case summaries, juror interviews, completed questionnaires, trial transcripts, reports, working papers, student papers, and audiotapes. Using mock trials, the project was part of an effort by the Law School to integrate social science research methodology into legal research.
The Jury Project Records consist of five series:
Series I, Case Summaries, Jury Interviews, and Trial Reports, contains typed notes, summaries and questionnaires from several cases in 1953/54. Materials are arranged by case.
Series II, Papers produced in conjunction with the Jury Project, contains a partial copy of a fourteen chapter summary and commentary on the Zirklebaugh case, and several essays on aspects of jury selection.
Series III, Working papers of the Jury Project, contains reports, notes, and memos, relating to the Jury Project.
Series IV, Student papers, contains student papers on the subject of jury selection.
Series V, Audiotapes, contains 208 7-inch reel-to-reel audio tapes, primarily connected with three cases (Conway vs. International Drug Company; The People vs. Martin Graham; Keeley vs Haynes), as well as tapes from the 1957 Conference of International Legal Science. Tapes are arranged by case, and then chronologically, with conference and miscellaneous tapes at the end of the series.
