| Abstract: | This collection contains the papers of University of Chicago professor and physical chemist Ole Kleppa. The collection includes administrative documents, correspondence, conference material, proposals, grant material, research, and teaching material. Also contained within the collection are records pertaining to the University of Chicago student protests and sit-ins of 1969. The collection dates from 1950 to 2005, with the bulk of the material dating between 1960 and 2000. |
This collection is open for research with the exception of Boxes 49-51. Box 49 is restricted until 2043 and Boxes 50 and 51 are restricted until 2084.

Ole Kleppa was born in Oslo, Norway on February 4, 1920. He received his early education in Norway. In occupied Norway during World War II, Kleppa was a student government leader who took part in resistance activities and narrowly escaped the Gestapo while fleeing to Britain. In Britain, he served in the Norwegian Army as an officer of Industrial Intelligence and trained U.S. soldiers in cold weather environment skills. After the war he resumed his education, and in 1956 he received a Doctor of Technology degree from the Norwegian Technical University. Kleppa began his long-term association with the University of Chicago and The Institute for the Study of Metals (now the James Franck Institute) in 1947. He became an Assistant Professor in 1952, an Associate Professor in 1958, and a Professor in 1962. Kleppa's research resulted in more than three-hundred scientific publications, mostly in the field of high-temperature thermochemistry. He is known for developing the Kleppa calorimeter which allows for detailed measurements of heat released in chemical reactions.
In 1969, Kleppa was involved in the University of Chicago administration's response to student protests. Student protests against the dismissal of Professor Marlene Dixon from the Departments of Sociology and Human Development quickly expanded into protests against the University's faculty appointment policies, and allegations of racism within community development projects. Protests included a sit-in occupation of the Administration Building, demonstrations of support and condemnation of the sit-in, hunger strikes by students, assaults on professors, and destruction of university property. Kleppa opposed the student protests from the onset and was actively involved in the disciplinary process that brought them to an end.
Kleppa held several administrative positions throughout his academic career. He was Associate Director and Director of The James Franck Institute 1968¯1977, and Director of the Materials Research Laboratory at the University of Chicago, 1984¯1987. He served on the Board of Editors of the Journal of Chemical Physics, Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics, and Journal of Phase Equilibria. Professor Kleppa won such prestigious awards as the Huffman Memorial Award in 1982, U.S. Scientist Humboldt Award, 1983¯1984, and the Hume Rothery Award in 1994. Kleppa was visiting Professor for the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science in 1975 and a visiting professor the University of Paris, Orsay in 1977. He was a member of the Royal Norwegian Society for Science and Letters, a member of the Norwegian Academy for Technological Sciences, and a Fellow of AAAS and of the American Society for Microbiology. Kleppa retired as a Professor Emeritus in 1990. He died in 2007.
The Ole Kleppa Papers contain administrative documents, correspondence, conference material, proposals, grant material, research, and teaching material. Also contained within the collection are records pertaining to the University of Chicago student protests of 1969. Materials in the collection date from 1950 to 2005, with the bulk of the material dating between 1960 and 2000.
This collection is divided into 8 series: Series I Administrative; Series II Correspondence; Series III Travel, Conferences, Symposiums, and Workshops; Series IV Project Proposals, Grants, and Contracts; Series V Research and Writing; Series VI Teaching; Series VII Writing by Others; and Series VIII Restricted. All folders are in chronological order by latest dated document within the folder, with the exception of the correspondence series. The correspondence series is organized in chronological order by the latest dated document, except for the scientific correspondence which is organized alphabetically by correspondent.
Series I Administrative consists of memoranda, reports, committee documents and other administrative documents dating from 1953 to 2000. Within this series is Subseries I Student Protests and Sit-Ins. It contains documents and ephemera related to the University of Chicago student protests during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Included in this subseries are correspondence related to the protests, administrative documents, posters, flyers, publicity, reports, public statements, and press releases. Also included are documents related to national unrest on college campuses in the late 1960s, and reports on women in academia.
Series II Correspondence contains academic and scientific correspondence from 1950 to 2000.
Series III Travel, Conferences, Symposiums, and Workshops consists of documents pertaining to Kleppa's professional travel, and his attendance at conferences, symposiums, and workshops. The series includes correspondence and research related to specific conferences. Kleppa organized his conference files by the name of the conference, and this order has been maintained wherever possible.
Series IV Project Proposals, Grants, and Contracts consists of project proposals, grant material, and contracts with various foundations, government agencies and corporations. The folders are organized by agency. If research results are filed with the proposal, grant, or contract, they are included in this series.
Series V Research and Writing contains notes and documents pertaining to Kleppa's research, manuscripts, and published articles.
Series VI Teaching includes documents pertaining to classes taught by Kleppa at the University of Chicago, and lecture notes and teaching aids from Kleppa's colleagues.
Series VIII Restricted contains restricted materials. Box 49 contains budgetary and personnel materials and is restricted for 50 years from date of record creation. Boxes 50 and 51 contain student grades and evaluations and are restricted for 80 years from date of record creation.
