Biographical Note

Bjarne Hjorthoj and Erling Hjorthoj Lunde were brothers who, along with other members of their family, attended the University of Chicago.

Bjarne Lunde was born on March 14, 1889 in Chicago to Selma and Theodore Lunde, Norwegian immigrants. The family lived in Edison Park, IL, and Bjarne attended Maine Township High School. He entered the University of Chicago in 1908 and completed a Bachelor of Science degree in 1912. At the university, Lunde was captain of the cross country team, on the staff of the student newspaper the Daily Maroon, and a member of Alpha Tau Omega. In 1915, Bjarne married Dorothy Wood, and the couple had two children. Bjarne Lunde died in January 1970.

Erling Lunde (sometimes spelled Earling) was born on April 13, 1891. He attended the University of Chicago from 1910 to 1914, earning a Bachelor of Philosophy. He was class treasurer and later president of the Undergraduate Council, and also a member of Alpha Tau Omega. Lunde married Laura Hughes in 1917 and they had two children. Erling Lunde died in June 1979.

Two other Lunde siblings, Arvid and Solveig, received degrees from the University of Chicago, and their mother, Selma Clements Lunde, attended briefly.

Scope Note

The collection comprises three scrapbooks, one compiled by Bjarne Lunde and two by Erling Lunde. There is also a small datebook and a piece of university fundraising literature sent to Erling Lunde as an alumnus. Material in Bjarne's scrapbook documents his time at the university, with a few items that predate his matriculation. Erling's books cover roughly his first two and last two years of college, with some earlier material and some later reunion-related mailings. All three scrapbooks contain personal ephemera such as dance cards, ticket stubs, athletic paraphernalia, and menus. Many items are from Greek social events. There are also news clippings, photographs, greeting cards and other correspondence. Of particular interest are photographs of the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico, included in Erling Lunde's first scrapbook (Box 2) and taken during a Glee Club trip to the Southwest in 1911 or 1912.
