Scope Note

Saint Bernard of Clairvaux's advice to Pope Eugene III on ecclesiastical government, composed during 1149-1152, which belogings to the genre of mirror for magistrates. Warning the Pope to avoid tyrannical acts, Bernard outlines his ideal of the model pontiff, then suggests a wide variety of reforms in ecclesiastical government.
