Museum Reads at the Library: Meiji Modern

Visitors to the Joseph Regenstein Library’s First Floor will now find a display of books supplementing the Smart Museum of Art’s current exhibition, Meiji Modern: Fifty Years of New Japan.  The Smart’s landmark exhibition takes a fresh look at the art of Japan’s Meiji era (1868-1912).

Assembled in collaboration with colleagues at the Smart Museum and the Department of Art History, Regenstein Reserves’ Meiji Modern collection provides an overview of the same period, exploring historical and practical artistic contexts.  Featured books examine works ranging from ceramics to textiles to paintings.

The Smart Museum exhibition and the University of Chicago Library collection are on display through June 9.  The Library’s items are available for check out by UChicago faculty, students, and staff for a 7-day loan period.

Both the Smart Museum’s exhibition and the Library’s collection can be viewed for free. Visitors to UChicago Library are welcome to its spaces; get a visitor pass by checking in at Regenstein Library’s entry desk.
