Richard Walter Manning was a composer, arranger, and band leader in Chicago from the 1920’s to the 1960’s.
The Richard Manning Band Collection is organized into two series: Series I, Arrangements and Compositions; and Series II, General. The Richard Manning Band Collection contains stock and handwritten arrangements for dance bands, music books, newspaper articles, advertisements, and correspondence.
Series I, Arrangements and Compositions is organized into two subseries: Subseries 1: Stock Arrangements; and Subseries 2, Oversize. Arrangements are organized alphabetically by title and include some or all of the following: title, lyricist(s), composer(s), arranger(s), publisher, and date. Some titles may have more than one arrangement and may be in both subseries. Some pieces have more than one title and all titles are noted. Also included are folio collections which contain multiple pieces bound together.
Subseries 1, Stock Arrangements, contains primarily published and a few handwritten arrangements.
Subseries II: Oversize, contains primarily handwritten and a few published arrangements. Some oversize arrangements have stamped or handwritten names, which may be the arranger, composer, band leader, musician, or someone else affiliated with the music. These names include Emil Ascher, Ralph Bart, Jimmy Barton, Marie Bernard, Slater Brockman, Ernest Brooks, Henry Busse, John David Campbell, Alden Carpenter, Keller De Ousouwick, Frank De Voa, Oliver Ditron, Bob Emmerich, Walter Ford, Ada Ghio, Chas. Harrison, Jerry Herman, H.E. Hyde, Buster Johnson, Chas. Johnson, W.A. Kelly, Richard Koustz, Anton Lada, Charles J. Lang, Chas. J. Levy, Carroll Lucas, Richard W. Series II, General, contains music books, chord charts, advertisements, correspondence, newspaper articles, and material related to Manning’s performances. There is a handwritten manuscript of Manning's textbook Practical Harmony and Instrumentation and copies of “Richard Walter Manning’s Practical Cornet Hints.” Also included is publicity, a sign, seating charts, price lists, set lists, and notes about Manning and his performances. The correspondence is from a printing service and a letter discussing a music manuscript.
