Databases

The online catalog does not provide access to the contents of journals. To find articles on a specific topic you will need to use an indexing and abstracting resource, like Biological Abstracts. In some cases, a link to the full text of the article will be available within the database. Most of the time, once you have found a citation, you will need to check the library catalog to see if we own the journal the article is published in.

19th Century Masterfile / Poole's Plus Doing a bit of historical research? Poole's provides indexing to nineteenth century periodicals, books, newspapers, and government documents.


Agricola

Subjects include agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, animal science, chemistry, energy, entomology, cooperative extension, food science, forestry, geography, home economics, human nutrition, life sciences, natural resources, plant diseases, insect pests and their control, rural sociology and veterinary medicine. Covers 1970 to present.



Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts Subject coverage includes aquaculture, brackishwater environments, conservation, engineering, environmental quality, fisheries, freshwater environments, limnology, marine biotechnology, marine environments, marine geology, meteorology, oceanography, policy and legislation, wildlife management, and many others. ASFA Includes journal articles, conference proceedings, technical reports, books, patents, and many other international sources from 1978 to present. Also includes access to Oceanic Abstracts. Print volumes for the years 1971-1981 are in the Crerar Library lower level shelving at 016.59195205/1.


Beilstein Crossfire Provides client-server based access to over 8 million organic compounds, including 5 million chemical reactions and 35 million associated chemical and physical properties, with corresponding literature references. Derived from the print Beilstein Handbook of Organic Chemistry, this database covers the literature from 1771 to present. Structure, numeric, and text searching are available. Older volumes are available in the Chemistry Library Reference Collection at QD251.B4191 (also QD251.B41, QD251.B414, QD251.B415, QD251.B418, QD251.B419).


Biological Abstracts (BIOSIS)

Coverage from 1969 - present

Corresponds to the printed edition of Biological Abstracts. Broad coverage is provided of all life sciences research, including botany, zoology and microbiology, as well as such interdisciplinary fields as clinical and experimental medicine, biochemistry and biotechnology.

Print volumes from 1926-1995 are available in the Crerar Library Reference Collection at Z5321.B6.



ChemIDPlus

A database of 350,000 chemical records, including 56,000 with structures. Locator links allow immediate searching of other databases for information about a given chemical.



COMPENDEX / Engineering Index All areas of engineering are covered, including biological, chemical, environmental, hydrology, biotechnology, food sciences, and many other related fields. Citations from 1990 - present. Abstracts come from 2600 engineering journals, conferences, and reports. Printed volumes from 1884-1997 are available in the Crerar Library Reference Collection at T1.E46.


Current Contents

Current Contents Lists tables of contents for over 6500 journals. You may also set up personal profiles which you execute as desired to discover when new articles of interest are published in specific journals in your subject area.



Dictionary of Substances and Their Effects (DOSE) Contains data on 4123 chemicals which have been studied for environmental impact or toxicity, and provides all the required information for the assessment of risks associated with the use of those chemicals. Including Ecotoxicity, Mammalian & avian toxicity, Metabolism and toxicokinetics, & Genotoxicity


Encyclopedia of Life Sciences Covers the core areas of : Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Clinical Medicine, Developmental Biology, Diversity of Life, Ecology, Evolution, Genetics History and Philosophy of Science Immunology Microbiology Molecular Biology Neuroscience Plant Science Structural Biology Virology Also available in Print volumes also available at Crerar Reference, floor 1 QH302.5.E56 2002


Environmental Health Information Services NIEHS (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences environmental health information service) is a full-service site that produces, maintains, and disseminates information on the environment in the form of a searchable directory on the Internet It is the most extensive international database of searchable information on the environment, toxicity, and cancer.


Entrez

Entrez is a search and retrieval system that integrates information from databases at NCBI. These databases include nucleotide sequences, protein sequences, macromolecular structures, whole genomes, and MEDLINE, through PubMed. Includes: PubMed, Nucleotides, Proteins, Structures, Genomes, PopSet, Taxonomy, & OMIM - Online Mendalian Inheritance in Man.

History of Science, Technology & Medicine

Indexes books, conference proceedings and articles from over 600 journals and is international in scope. Coverage begins with 1976, and it is updated annually and is accessed via the RLG/Eureka interface to CitaDel files.



ISI Chemistry Databases Provides access to reaction and compound information. Equivalent to the print Current Chemical Reactions and Index Chemicus. Covers 1985-current for reactions and 1994-current for compounds. Supplemented by a file of "classical" reactions from mid-1800's to late 1990's. Text and structure searchable. Requires a plugin for structure/reaction searching. Printed copies of the Current Chemical Reactions are available in the Chemistry Library at QD1.C92. Printed copies for the current two years of Index Chemicus are available unbound in the Chemistry Library.


Journal Citation Reports

What journals are important in your discipline? Journal evaluation and citation data are available in the Science Edition for about 5,000 journals in all areas of science, medicine and technology.



Oceanic Abstracts Covers technical literature pertaining to the marine and brackish-water environments. Including: marine biology and physical oceanography, fisheries, aquaculture, non-living resources, meteorology and geology, living and non-living resources, meteorology and geology, environmental, technological, and legislative topics. Dates of Coverage 1981 - current. Print copies v.21-28(1984-1991) locate at Crerar on the lower lever compact shelving at Z6004.P6O1731. CSA interface also includes access to Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts.


Plants Database

Created by the National Plant Data Center, USDA this database focuses on vascular plants, mosses, liverworts, hornworts, and lichens of the U.S. and its territories. Includes names, checklists, automated tools, identification information, species abstracts, distributional data, crop information, plant symbols, plant growth data, plant materials information, plant links, and references. The Proteome BioKnowledge Library? (Incyte Genomics)

Access is limited to University of Chicago users. All first time users must set up an individual username and password.

Web-based collection of databases containing protein-specific information on human, mouse, and rat proteins, and model organisms. The following databases are included: YPD? (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), PombePD? (Schizosaccharomyces pombe), WormPD? (Caenorhabditis elegans), MycoPathPD? (human fungal pathogen database), HumanPSD? (Proteome Survey Data) and GPCR-PD? (G Protein-coupled Receptors database).


SciFinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts)

CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service) provides comprehensive coverage of the world's chemical literature, and includes biochemistry, organic chemistry, macromolecular chemistry, applied chemistry and chemical engineering, physical, inorganic, and analytical chemistry. SciFinder Scholar simultaneously searches the CA file as well as Medline and OldMedline. Print edition of Chemical Abstracts (1907 - 2001) locates at Crerar Reference, floor 1 and the Chemistry Library at QD1.A48.

Requires client software download to desktop computer, and network address within .uchicago.edu domain (no proxy server access at this time). Also available on public workstations in Chemistry and Crerar Libraries.



TOXNET

An integrated system for building, reviewing, and searching toxicology and environmental health-related databases. Developed by the Specialized Information Services (SIS) Division of the National Library of Medicine (NLM)



Web of Science / Science Citation Index

Coverage is from 1900 to current in all areas of the sciences. Printed volumes of Science Citation Index are available from 1945-1997 in the Crerar Library Reference Collection at AI3.S401.



Zoological Record Provides access to over 6,500 international journals, review annuals, monographs, meeting proceedings, books, and reports from 1978 to present. All major areas of zoology are represented, including: behavior, ecology, evolution, habitat, nutrition, parasitology, reproduction, taxonomy, and zoogeography. Older volumes are available from 1864-1995 in the Crerar Library Reference Collection at Z7993.Z85.
