Biographical Achives
The University of Chicago Library owns the biographical archives listed below. Each of them is a microfiche compilation of entries appearing in a large number of biographical reference works, including many highly specialized titles. The earliest reference work included was originally published in 1646, and the most recent in the 1990's. If an individual's biography appeared in several sources, each entry will be included.
The biographies are arranged alphabetically. There various ways in which the content is indexed. The Library has printed indexes for several of the sets listed below (see details in the individual entries.) The printed indexes provide brief entries, and valuable cross-references. The networked source World Biographical Index provides indexing for the content of the following biographical archives: American (I and II); Australasian; Baltic; Benelux; British (I and II); French (I and II); German (I and II); Jewish; Italian (I and II); Scandinavian; Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American (I and II). These electronic indexes provide access by names, occupation groups, countries, and birth and death dates. Both the printed indexes and the electronic indexes provide detailed lists of sources included in the archive.
If a title listed below is still is in preparation, and the Library may have only incomplete holdings to date, and a printed index may not yet be available. The archive is still searchable by name, however.
