This guide identifies and classifies over 900 monographs and serials in the University of Chicago Library that deal primarily with lesbian themes. It is largely a subset of the Guide to Gay and Lesbian Resources in the University of Chicago Library, compiled in 1998; but it has been updated by the addition of approximately 180 lesbian-themed titles acquired in late 1997, in 1998, and in early 1999.

For more information on how we compiled the original Guide, we refer the reader to its introduction. There one will also find the names of our colleagues whose assistance in the original project we gratefully acknowledge.

Sexuality is a very extensive subject, of which sexual orientation and homosexuality are only parts. Much of the most important literature on lesbianism is included in works that are parts of this more general literature of sexuality, which this guide does not seek to describe. For guidance to this extensive and important literature, readers are referred to Studies in Human Sexuality: A Selected Guide, ed. Suzanne Frayser and Thomas Whitby, 2nd edition, Englewood, Colorado, 1995 (Z164.S42 RR2). This work provides substantial abstracts to over a thousand works in every aspect of sexuality. The signed articles in Human Sexuality: An Encyclopedia, edited by Vern L. Bullough and Bonnie Bullough, New York, Garland, 1994 (HQ9.H8460 1994 RR2) provide short helpful bibliographies. We also encourage readers to search the Library’s catalogs under such headings as Sex Role, Sexual Behavior, Sex in Literature, Sex Customs, Sex and Law, and so forth, each of them having multiple subdivisions by place and aspect.

The burgeoning women’s studies literature is also rich in material on lesbians and lesbianism. To access this literature, we refer readers to the many guides, bibliographies, catalogs, almanacs, and other reference works listed in Women’s Studies: A Guide to Reference Sources in the University of Chicago Library (1999), a companion to this guide.

A large share of the literature on the place of lesbians in society also deals with gay males. Therefore the reader will find in this guide not only many individual works that deal with lesbians, but also other works that treat both lesbians and gay males. There has been an attempt in this guide, not always successful, to separately categorize materials that deal with lesbians and materials that deal with both lesbians and gay males.

Although this guide identifies pertinent periodical and serial runs, it does not list specific articles appearing in journals or newspapers. To locate such articles, as well as dissertations, reports given at conferences, contributions in books, and so forth, one should search standard electronic abstracting and indexing tools, such as Historical Abstracts, America: History and Life, and others for history; the MLA for literature; Sociological Abstracts for the literature of sociology and related fields, and PsychInfo for the literature of psychology and related fields. There are similar tools for the literatures of education, economics, anthropology, and many other fields, and very large databases for law and medicine. In addition, the Library provides access to many more broadly comprehensive indexing tools for news sources, and the literatures of the sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities. For more information, consult the Library’s web pages, or a reference librarian.

Several specialized bibliographies and guides can also assist the researcher in identifying articles of significance for lesbian studies. They are listed in the sections below entitled "Bibliographies, general," and "Bibliographies, literary; bibliographies, humanities."

While there are sections below that include biographical collections, biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs of lesbians, there has been no general attempt to identify all works in the Library about or by lesbians. We advise the reader seeking biographies of, and literary works by, lesbians to consult the Library’s catalogs under the names of particular individuals. Those seeking a listing or catalog of lesbians, we refer to section 1, below, where we identify several dictionaries, encyclopedias, and almanacs that have lists of entries of lesbians.

The last major section of this guide is a Literature Appendix, which lists literary works with lesbian themes. This appendix comprises only a portion of the Library's substantial holdings of literary works with lesbian, or bisexual themes. To be comprehensive, it would have been necessary to check lists of lesbian authors as well as bibliographies of imaginative literature with lesbian themes against the Library's catalogs. Unfortunately, this labor-intensive process was impossible within the limits of this guide's preparation. This appendix includes only titles retrieved by searching the online catalog for entries with gay, lesbian, bisexual, homosexual, queer, and similar terms in their subject headings or titles. This is relatively successful in identifying anthologies, but less useful for finding works by single authors. This is because library cataloging has only recently begun to include subject descriptions for works of fiction and has inconsistently included demographic identifications of authors.

Readers seeking fuller holdings should check the Library's catalogs for works and authors listed in the bibliographies in the first section below, as well as the extensive list on the Internet:

Contemporary Literary Authors of Lesbian, Gay & Bisexual Interest Writing in Western European Languages (/e/su/modlits/lbg.html).

The Women’s Studies and the Gay and Lesbian Studies pages of the Library’s website include a web version of this guide. It is searchable on a word-by-word basis, using the typical browser’s search function, thus making accessible every term appearing in this guide, whether in contents notes, annotations, or titles. The pages also include links to the most important web sources for women’s studies and for gay and lesbian studies, respectively.
