Creating In-Text Citations and Footnotes Using Cite While You Write
EndNote's "Cite While You Write" feature allows you to utilize the references stored in your EndNote libraries for creating in-text citations, footnotes, and bibliographies in your Microsoft Word documents. When you install EndNote on your computer, the program automatically installs a Cite While You Write plug-in for MS Word. The plug-in, if installed correctly, will include an EndNote toolbar in your copy of MS Word.
Entering Citations and Footnotes
To begin using Cite While You Write, click on the EndNote symbol in your Word toolbar to open your desired library. To locate a specific reference, select the "Search" icon. Once you have located the reference you would like to use, highlight the reference and select the "Insert" icon on your toolbar. EndNote will automatically enter the in-text citation into your document formatted in the output style you have selected in EndNote.
If you are using a style that requires footnotes, you will need to create a footnote as you normally would with MS Word (Insert/Reference/Footnote). Place your cursur within the footnote and select the "Insert" feature in your Cite While You Write toolbar to enter you citation. Again, EndNote will format the footnote according to the style you have selected.
In addition to your citations, EndNote will also create a formatted bibliography for all of the works cited in your document. The bibliography will appear at the end of the document.
Editing References and Changing Styles
While EndNote appears to format the citation automatically as you compose your document, EndNote is actually entering a small code which connects your formatted citation to the reference in your EndNote library, similar to this: {McKibben, 1995 #107}. You can view these temporary citations in your document by selecting the "Unformat Citations" icon in your EndNote toolbar.
The temporary citations provide you with the flexibility to edit and reformat your citations as you work on your document. For example, should you locate a spelling error in the author's last name, you can make this change in the reference within your EndNote library and be automatically reflected in all the citations for that specific work in your Word document. To view the changes, all you need to do is click on the "Format Bibliography" icon in your toolbar. This feature also allows you to easily switch from style to style, should you wish.
EndNote's temporary citations will remain in your Word document until you request that they are removed (by selecting the "Remove Field Code" icon in your toolbar). But once you decide to do this, your Word document is no longer linked to your EndNote library. Any changes made from that point on will need to be done in your document and will not be reflected in your EndNote Library.
