Using the Library Catalog with EndNote

EndNote's Connection Files allow you to search the library catalog directly through EndNote and import records into your library. The Library has developed customized Connection Files for EndNote. Versions X2 and X3 include this customized file. Users of older versions of EndNote must download a custom Connection File to connect to the Library Catalog.

Recent changes to the Library Catalog require either downloading our updated Connection File or editing an existing Connection File.

Download the University of Chicago Library Catalog Connection File (Version X and Higher)

Download (Version X and higher) Older versions, see below.

Save the file in the "Connections" folder in your EndNote program folder.
PCs: usually C:\Program Files\Endnote\Connections
Macs: usually Applications Folder -> EndNote -> Connections

Edit an Existing Connection File

  1. Open EndNote.
  2. Select File --> Connection Manager
  3. Locate the UofC Library file. Select Edit
  4. Select Connection settings
  5. Change "server address" to libcat.uchicago.edu
  6. Select File --> Save

You should now be able to connect to the Library Catalog.

Older Versions of EndNote

The Library developed these Conenction Files over the past few years. These files must be edited to update the server name. We are unable to update these files as they require the older versions of EndNote.

Searching the Library Catalog in EndNote

Once you have installed the connection file, you are ready to begin searching the Library Catalog. You can search the Library Catalog using the connection file from both on and off-campus.

  1. Open EndNote. Go to "Tools" and "Connect" and then again "Connect...".
  2. Select the University of Chicago connection file. The connection file which comes installed with EndNote will be labeled "U of Chicago". The custom file which you downloaded should also appear in the list, but will include the version number (i.e. U of Chicagov10).
  3. Highlight the connection file and then click "Search"
  4. A search box should appear that states "Remote Search of Library Catalog at the University of Chicago". Enter your search terms and click "Search"
  5. Retrieve your references and highlight those that you wish to move to your EndNote library.
  6. Click "Copy # References To" and select your EndNote library. Your references should import automatically.
