Importing References From Library Databases

You can import citations/references from the majority of the Library's databases into your EndNote library. When importing references, please note the following:

If you are having difficulty importing references from any of these databases, or you do not see a specific database included in the list, please feel free to Ask a Librarian.

ABC-CLIO
(Historical Abstracts and America History and Life)

  1. Search and mark the records you would like to import.
  2. Click on "View Tagged Only".
  3. Click on "Export Options".
  4. Select "Full Entry" then "Tagged Entries" and "EndNote/ProCite/Reference Manager". Click "Export Records".
  5. Select your EndNote library and your references should import automatically.

Beilstein/Gmelin

Beilstein/Gmelin citations do not include abstracts and often cite only the specific page, and not starting and ending pages.

Via CrossFire Commander

  1. Search for compound facts, structure or reactions.
  2. From each hit in results, view citations using "Get" drop down and choosing "Get all related citations".
  3. Choose "Export Hits" and then "Procite/EndNote/Reference Manager" and save as ascii text file.
  4. Open EndNote. Select your EndNote Library.
  5. Go to File/Import.
  6. Under "Import Data File," select the text file you just saved.
  7. Under "Import Options" select "Reference Manager (RIS)"
  8. Click import and your references should import automatically.

Chadwyck-Healey
(Periodicals Contents Index, International Index to the Performing Arts, etc.)

  1. Search and mark the records you would like to import.
  2. Select "Mark List" and then "Select/Clear Citations".
  3. Click on "Download Selected Citations."
  4. Select "Export directly to Procite, EndNote or Reference Manager."
  5. Select your EndNote library and your references should import automatically.

Compendex
(Engineering Village)

  1. Search Compendex/Engineering Village and mark the records you want to import.
  2. Click the "Download" button at the top of the page.
  3. From the "Download Selected Records" menu in the popup window, select "RIS, EndNote, Procite, Reference Manager"
  4. Click "Download" button and choose "Save" (file will have .ris extension)
  5. Open EndNote. Select your EndNote Library.
  6. Go to File/Import.
  7. Click on Choose File and select the .ris file saved previously
  8. From the "Import Option" dropdown menu select the "Reference Manager (RIS)" option
  9. Click on "Import" and your references should import automatically
  10. Check and edit as required.

CSA
(Index Islamicus, Sociological Abstracts, WorldWide Political Science Abstracts, etc.)

CSA databases do not have a direct export feature for EndNote. To import records, you must use an import filter. The filters that are supplied with EndNote do not import everything correctly. Download our updated filter (courtesy of the University of Queensland)

  1. Search and mark the records you would like to import.
  2. Click on "Save, Print, Email". Select "Full Format - no references" Save as "PC" format.
  3. Open EndNote. Select File/Import.
  4. Chose your file (usually called "csaresults.txt").
  5. Under "Import Options" select "Other filters"
  6. Click on "Find" and select "CSA". Then select the database you have searched.

EBSCO
(Academic Search Premier, Business Source Complete, EconLit*, etc.)

  1. Search and select the records you would like to import by clicking on the "Add" icon on the right side of the screen.
  2. Select "View folder" or "Folder Has Items"
  3. Select "Export", then "Direct Export to EndNote, ProCite, or Reference Manager" and click "Save".
  4. Select your EndNote library and your references should import automatically.

*Some fields in EconLit records do not import correctly. For best results, please use our custom filter.

GOOGLE SCHOLAR

A. Set your preferences in Google Scholar:

  1. From the Google Scholar search page, click on the Scholars Preferences link..
  2. Scroll down to the Bibliography Manager section.
  3. Select "Show Links to Import into" and select "EndNote" from the drop-down.
  4. Click Save Preferences.

B. Export records into EndNote:

  1. Conduct your search in Google Scholar
  2. Each record displayed will have an "Import into EndNote" link. Clicking on the link will launch the EndNote export.
  3. Select your EndNote library and your references should import automatically.

(Web of Science--Humanities, Social Science, and Science Citation Indexes)

  1. Search and mark the records you would like to import
  2. Click on "Submit Marks" (on right hand side of your screen)
  3. View your "Marked List" (on top of your screen)
  4. Select "Export to Reference Software" and then click "Export".
  5. Select your EndNote library and your references should import automatically.

We regret that records cannot be exported from LexisNexis to EndNote at this time.

MathSciNet

Only the basic bibliographic citation can be imported into EndNote. You cannot import the review or abstract.

Search MathSciNet and mark the records you want to import.

  1. At the top of the search results page and choose "Citations ( EndNote )" from the drop down menu
  2. Click on the "Retrieve Marked" button.
  3. Use the "File/Save Page As" function in your browser to save the file as text only.
  4. Open EndNote. Select your EndNote Library.
  5. Got to File/Import.
  6. Click on Choose File and select the text only file saved previously
  7. From the "Import Option" dropdown menu select the "EndNote Import" option
  8. Click on "Import" and your references should import automatically
  9. Check and edit as required.

OCLC FirstSearch
(WorldCat, MLA, PAIS International, WilsonSelect, etc.)

  1. Search and mark the records you would like to import.
  2. Select the "Marked Records" option at the top of your screen.
  3. Select the "Export" icon in the grey toolbar.
  4. Select "EndNote" under "Export To"
  5. Select "Export".
  6. Select your EndNote library and your references should import automatically.

(MEDLINE, GeoRef, PsycInfo, Social Work Abstracts, etc.)

  1. Search and mark the records you would like to import.
  2. Go to "Results Manager"
  3. Under "Result Format" select "Direct Export"
  4. Under "Actions" select "Save"
  5. Select "Export results to Endnote, Procite, or Reference Manager". Click "Continue".
  6. Select your EndNote library and your references should import automatically.

  1. Search and mark the records you want to import.
  2. Select "Export."
  3. Select "Export directly to ProCite, EndNote or Reference Manager."
  4. Select your EndNote library and your references should import automatically.

PubMed

You can import records two ways from PubMed, using an import filter or direct search using a connection file.

Using an Import Filter

  1. Search and mark the records you want to import.
  2. From the "Display" drop down menu select "Medline"
  3. From the "Send To" drop-down menu select "Text"
  4. Save the document as a text file (.txt).
  5. Open EndNote. Select your EndNote Library.
  6. Go to File/Import.
  7. Under "Import Data File," select the text file you just saved.
  8. Under "Import Options" select "PubMed (NLM)"
  9. Click import and your references should import automatically.

Direct Search Using a Connection File

  1. Open EndNote. Go to Tools/Connect.
  2. Select "PubMed (NLM)"
  3. Enter your search terms and click "Search"
  4. Retrieve your references and highlight those that you wish to move to your EndNote library.
  5. Click "Copy # References To" and select the library.
  6. Your references should import automatically.

RLG
(RLG Union Catalog, FRANCIS, Anthopology Plus, etc.)

  1. Search and mark the records you want to import.
  2. Select Display Records as "Full"
  3. Select "Export" to Bibliographic Software.
  4. A pop-up window should appear. Select "EndNote 4.03 or higher" and click "OK".
  5. Select your EndNote library and your references should import automatically.

SciFinder Scholar
(Mac & PC)

  1. Search and mark the records you wish to import.
  2. Select Save from the File menu and use the Tagged text format.
  3. Open EndNote. Select your EndNote Library.
  4. Go to File/Import.
  5. Under "Import Data File," select the text file you just saved.
  6. Under "Import Options" select "SciFinder (CAS)"
  7. Click import and your references should import automatically

Scopus

  1. Search Scopus and mark the records you want to import.
  2. Click the "Output" button in the Results area (located below the Refine Results area)\
  3. Select desired output type "Export" button
  4. Select from dropdown menus Export format "RIS format (Reference Manager, Procite, EndNote)" and Output "Abstract format" (or other desired format)
  5. Click "Export" button and choose "Save" (default filename "scopus.ris")
  6. Open EndNote. Select your EndNote Library.
  7. Go to File/Import.
  8. Click on Choose File and select the .ris file saved previously
  9. From the "Import Option" dropdown menu select the "Reference Manager (RIS)" option
  10. Click on "Import" and your references should import automatically

  1. Search and mark the records you want to import.
  2. Click on the "Exporting/Citing" button on the left side of the screen.
  3. Select the + sign next to "Export to Refworks, EndNote Software".
  4. Under "Download Record(s) into" and select "The EndNote Filter". Click "Export."
  5. Select your EndNote library and your references should import automatically.
