Equipment and Special Features

Photocopiers: Almost all of the copiers are Toshiba e-studio 35 digital copiers. The copier features include the following:

Microform Reader/Printers: All of the microform reader/printers are digital machines manufactured by Canon. Six microform reader/printers are located in Regenstein; four are the MS400 machines, of which one has been configured for digital scanning; one is a MS500 and one is a MS800 machine. A MS500 machine is located in Crerar and a MS400 machine is located in Law. The 500 machines are ADA compliant. The 800 machine has an extra wide screen that is excellent for using when reading and/or copying from newspapers and/or other oversized material on film.

Networked Print Stations: Each library, with the exception of Law, has one or more networked laser print stations. In Regenstein, black and white laser printers are located on each floor (with the exception of the B-level). Color laser prints are available on the 1st floor of Crerar and Regenstein. The print management software, Uniprint allows you to direct your print from any of the library workstations (or the USITE/Regenstein cluster machines) to one of the networked print stations.

Card Vending Machines: Crerar, Harper, Law and Regenstein have vending machines from which you can add value to your Chicago card and/or purchase a Copico vended card. A one-time charge of $0.30 will be deducted at the time of the initial purchase of a Copico vended card. This card is reusable. Crerar and Regenstein each have two card vending machines; Harper and Law each have one. In addition to the card vending machines, you may add value to your Chicago Card or Copico vended card on selected public copiers shown on the location chart below.

Costs; Purchasing and/or Adding Value to Your Card

Photocopies: The cost per copy (8 1/2 x 11) is $0.15 with cash and $0.12 with a Chicago Card or a Copico-vended card. Two-sided (duplexed) copies are charged as two copies. You can pay for your copies by using cash, credit card, or a magnetic card (Chicago Card or Copico-vended card). Please note that only selected photocopiers will accept coins or cash.

Microform Prints: $0.15 with a Chicago card or a Copico vended card. These microform reader/printers do not accept coins.

Networked Prints: $0.10 for black and white prints, $0.50 for color laser prints. These networked print stations do not accept coins.

Purchasing a Copico-Vended Card: Library users may purchase a Copico-Vended Card from either of two card vending machines located in Regenstein on the first floor, in Crerar in either the first floor south copy room or the first floor north copy room, in D'Angelo Law in the copy room near the Circulation Desk, and in Harper near the Circulation Desk. Insert $1 into the indicated slot and a card will be dispensed automatically. A one-time charge of $0.30 will be deducted for the cost of the card at the time of initial purchase. The Copico-Vended Card is reusable. Do not throw it away when the encoded value is exhausted. Do not forget to sign the back of your Copico-Vended Card.

Adding Value to your Chicago Card or Copico-Vended Card: You may add value to your Chicago Card or Copico-Vended Card on selected copiers or in any of the six card dispensing units (Regenstein, Crerar, D'Angelo, and Harper). Insert your card as you would to make copies. Insert cash ($1, $5, $10, or $20) into the bill acceptor slot. Your card will be incremented with this value automatically.

You may also add value to your magnetic card by charging your credit card. Credit card access devices are attached to selected card vending machines (one in the Regenstein's first floor, another in Crerar's first floor copy room, and the third in the second floor copy room in the D'Angelo Law Library). These devices enable you to add value to your card using a commercial credit card (Visa, Mastercard or Discover). Insert your Chicago card or Copico-vended card into the acceptor slot on the card dispenser, as if you were adding value with currency, and place your credit card in the acceptor slot on the credit card access unit. A $10 minimum charge is required.

There is a University limit of $50 that may be encoded on either type of card. When you are finished, press the card return button and remove your card. If your card is not returned, call 4-0038 or contact the Identification & Privileges Office, Regenstein, 1st floor.

Making Copies and/or Networked Prints

Chicago Card: Copies and/or networked prints can be made using the cash stripe on your Chicago Card. Insert your card, with your picture facing up and the top of the card to the left, in the card acceptor slot. The value available on the card will be displayed and the copier/printer activated. Each time a copy is made the value on the card will be reduced by the appropriate amount. When you are finished copying, press the card return button and remove your card. If your card is not returned, call 4-0038 or contact the Identification & Privileges Office, Regenstein, 1st floor.

Copico-vended Card: Insert the Copico Card into the card acceptor slot, magnetic stripe down, using the arrows on the card as a guide. The value available on the card will be displayed and the copier activated. Each time a copy is made the value on the card will be reduced by the appropriate amount. When you are finished copying, press the card return button and remove your card. If your card is not returned, call 4-0038 or contact the Identification & Privileges Office, Regenstein, 1st floor.

Making Scans from Microforms Using the Canon MS400 Machine

In the Microforms Department in Regenstein (Room 300E), one of the Canon MS400 machines is configured for digital output. There is no charge to scan images from film or fiche. To obtain digital output, a reader must provide his or her own flash drive to save files. The computer workstation, which is attached to the MS400 machine, is a stand along machine; it is not connected to the campus network.

The workstation is equipped with Image.Scan software, a Canon product that guides a reader in how to obtain a scan as output. It is not possible to obtain paper output from this machine. For directions in using the machine, please click here.
