Frequently Asked Questions

I can't find an item on the shelf. What should I do?

If an item is listed as being "Not checked out" in Lens Search or the Library Catalog, but you can't find it on the shelf, our Search Services staff can help.

If you'd like immediate assistance finding an item, you are welcome to contact Search Services staff directly by asking at any circulation or reference desk.

You can also submit a search request by clicking on the "Can't find it?" link in the Lens Search or Library Catalog record for that item and providing your contact information (click here to fill out a blank version). Search Services staff will conduct a thorough search for the item and contact you by email with the results of that search. Most searches are completed within two business days.

If we find the item, we will notify you that it has been placed on hold for you and is available for pickup at the circulation desk of its library. If we cannot locate the item, we will notify you that it has been declared missing.

If the item is missing, you have two options for automatically requesting a copy of the item. You may choose either or both of these options when you submit your search request. You can request a copy of the item via Interlibrary loan. Most loans arrive within ten business days. You can also choose to keep your request active; if the item is recovered within 45 days of your search request, it will be placed on hold for you and you will be notified.
