General Summary

Job Summary

Performs graphic design and user research for UChicagoNODE, a web portal that unifies access to collections and archives at the University of Chicago.

Responsibilities

  • Meets with stakeholders to determine digital collection interface requirements and user research questions to be answered, using prototyping tools, such as Figma, Sketch, or InVision.
  • Coordinates all phases of user research, including recruitment, study design, data collection and analysis, and reporting.
  • Develops wireframes/mockups for all views for UI/UX testing before coding begins using tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign.
  • Tests wireframes/mockups with users, and incorporates feedback.
  • Writes HTML template code.
  • Ensures all templates are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), in conformance with WCAG 2.1 AA, and usable with a variety of screens, assistive technologies, and input devices.
  • Ensures the consistency of graphic design elements across UChicagoNode.
  • Plans, develops and disseminates information designed to keep the public informed of the organization's programs, accomplishments, or point of view, with moderate levels of guidance and direction.
  • Accomplishes assigned duties through two or more of the following: written communications; visual/graphic media, which may include Web site development and maintenance; speeches and personal contact. The incumbent is still acquiring higher-level knowledge and skills.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years professional design and web developer experience including: producing and maintaining complex websites.
  • Working collaboratively as part of a software development team.
  • Working in an academic, library, or research environment.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Experience with web analytics tools, usability testing and user research methods.
  • Using qualitative and quantitative research methods to profile site audiences. Knowledge of multiple methods including interviews, surveys, task-based testing.
  • Writing user studies.
  • Knowledge of software and services to support user research (Eg: Qualtrix, transcription services).
  • Experience interpreting test data and translating it to site requirements or user stories.
  • Demonstrated mastery of graphic design software, including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • Working knowledge of video and audio web delivery.
  • Thorough knowledge of WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards, and of tools for testing and troubleshooting accessibility issues. Knowledge of accessibility standards for documents, audio, video and other media.
  • Apply principles of user-centered design, universal design, interaction design, and information architecture to development of products.
  • Working knowledge of responsive/mobile design.
  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Knowledge of front-end development frameworks or libraries, such as Django, Flask, or React .
  • Experience researching APIs for third party systems and using them to integrate functionality into sites.
  • Use of prototyping tools, such as Figma, Sketch, or InVision
  • Experience using enterprise accessibility software, such as Siteimprove.
  • Configuring IIIF image viewers.
  • Securing IRB approval.
  • Platforms for managing user comments and crowdsourcing.
  • Proficiency in preprocessor stylesheet scripting (such as Less or Sass).
