Library Graduate Student Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Fellow

The University of Chicago Library believes that a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment builds a stronger, more creative community where we broaden approaches to our work and make better decisions. We encourage open and honest discussion, reflect on our assumptions, and actively seek viewpoints beyond our own. We welcome different perspectives as they challenge and motivate us to learn and respect the uniqueness that we each bring to our shared endeavors.

The University of Chicago Library’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Team (DEIT) is currently seeking a graduate fellow to conduct an environmental scan of diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and justice initiatives and practices within the Library, at the University, and among peer libraries.

In partnership with DEIT, the fellow will design and conduct interviews, focus groups, or other conversations with Library employees and units to identify areas of current or future diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and justice work in the Library. The fellow will be encouraged to incorporate methods, best practices, and perspectives from their training and experience into the design of the study. The fellow will work with DEIT to generate reports and other documents summarizing the findings of these information gathering activities and to articulate next steps for participating units and for the Library as a whole.

The fellow will be encouraged to shape this work based on their skills, perspectives, and interests. The fellow will gain experience in collaboration, facilitation, and communication within and across a complex organization. The fellow will have opportunities to inform Library strategic initiatives around diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and justice.

While the initial appointment is for a single academic quarter (Spring 2022), reappointment is possible through the end of Fall Quarter 2022. In later quarters the fellow may work with DEIT to design and conduct information gathering activities external to the Library, including with peer libraries and other University units.
