Hanna Holborn Gray Graduate Project Fellow at D'Angelo Law Library

Title: The Hanna Holborn Gray Graduate Project Fellow at D’Angelo Law Library

Division/Department: D'Angelo Law Library

Fellowship coordinator: Sheri Lewis, Director of the D’Angelo Law Library

General Summary:

The D’Angelo Law Library manages Chicago Unbound, the University of Chicago Law School’s institutional repository. Chicago Unbound contains the scholarship of the Law School community, providing full-text access to decades of Chicago Law faculty scholarship and the archives of many Law School journals, publications and historical sources. The Fellow will create and develop a new Chicago Unbound special collection highlighting the scholarship and service of the Law School’s deans throughout its history.

The project fellow would gain experience in selecting and organizing unique historical materials, acquire knowledge about the scholarship and history of the Law School and the scholars who have led it, and develop skills in collaboration, creativity, and the organization, evaluation and presentation of information for a virtual audience. These are highly marketable skills in “alt-ac” careers and the corporate sector. The fellowship serves also to introduce the student to the work at a professional school, and the service side of academia, which would better prepare them for work in the broader non-profit sector.

Fellows are expected to write a short reflection on their experience and to make a presentation to Library staff about their activities/project near or following the completion of their fellowship experience.

Activities:

  • The Fellow will create an historical collection on the Deans at the University of Chicago Law School using the platform for the Chicago Unbound repository, bepress’ Digital Commons.
  • The Fellow will learn and become knowledgeable in using the Digital Commons platform to select, organize, and describe materials.
  • The Fellow will complete the historical collection with a minimum of five Law School Deans.
  • For each Dean, the Fellow will review and select materials (e.g. articles, speeches, manuscripts, photographs) as well as organize and describe the selected materials in Chicago Unbound.
  • This Fellowship will be conducted entirely remotely with all meetings and communication via Zoom, email and phone.

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a UChicago graduate program and in good academic standing during the period of the fellowship
  • Experience using library collections and database for scholarly research
