19th-century maps of the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia. Most of these maps were published in Western Europe, and nearly all the others were published in Russia or in the United States. The maps are products of--or were designed to support--the major European and Russian activities in the region: exploration, scientific research, resource exploitation, conquest, and administration.

The Islamic Lithographs Collection, acquired by the University of Chicago Library in 2004, consists of approximately 330 nineteenth- to twentieth-century Arabic lithograph printed books, mostly published in Iran and India, through Egypt, Turkey, and the Levant are also represented. The first 52 titles in this collection have been digitized and can be accessed from the Library's online catalog.
