5th Biennial Workshop Schedule

Citizen science – engaging the public in research – has proved a creative and capable response to the increasing size of scientific datasets, particularly when coupled with machine learning algorithms and sophisticated task allocation and retirement rules. 

This free, hands-on workshop provides students at The University of Chicago the opportunity to learn more about the growing role of citizen science in collecting and deciphering research data. The workshop is not limited to any one discipline as it will provide a general overview of the topic and its impact.

Dr. Laura Trouille, Director of Citizen Science at the Adler Planetarium and co-I for Zooniverse

In this talk Dr. Trouille will provide an overview of Zooniverse innovations and open questions, as well as a brief tutorial on building your own crowdsourcing project using our free, DIY Project Builder tool.

Students are invited to use this time to enjoy refreshments in the computer lab while further exploring Zooniverse projects, brainstorming their own citizen science projects, or creating a project with the Project Builder.

More about Dr. Trouille

Dr. Laura Trouille is co-I for Zooniverse and Director of Citizen Science at the Adler Planetarium where she leads the Zooniverse web development and Teen Programs teams. She is also a Research Associate at Northwestern University. The Adler-Zooniverse group collaborates closely with Chris Lintott, PI for Zooniverse, and the Zooniverse web developers and team of researchers at the University of Oxford. Together they work with hundreds of researchers around the world to build, launch, and support Zooniverse projects.

While earning her Ph.D. in astronomy in 2010 studying galaxy evolution, she also earned the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning’s Delta certificate for STEM education research. As a CIERA Postdoctoral Fellow at Northwestern University’s Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics, she continued her research.

Zooniverse.org is a leader in online citizen science, with 1.6 million registered volunteers participating in 80 projects since 2007 that have led to over 100 peer-reviewed publications. There are currently 55 active projects at Zooniverse

The projects span the disciplines, from astronomy projects like Galaxy Zoo and Gravity Spy to transcription projects like AnnoTate to transcribe artist's notebooks to identifying chimps to tagging satellite images after a natural disaster to efficiently deploy relief efforts in Planetary Response Network. Zooniverse collaborates with hundreds of researchers around the world to build these online citizen science projects. Roughly half of the active projects were built using the free, DIY Zooniverse Project Builder tool.
