General Summary

Reporting to the GIS Librarian, the GIS Graduate Student Specialist is responsible for georeferencing historical map scans of Chicago, conducting quality control on georeferenced images, managing GIS data and workflows, and supporting georeferencing training provided by the GIS Librarian for student employees. This person will work closely with the GIS Librarian and the Project Manager for the NEH Chicago Maps Grant to ensure the movement of scanned map images through the georeferencing process and make them accessible to other Library units.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the GIS Librarian, moves batches of scanned maps through the georeferencing workflow in the Map Collection.
  • Uses established standards to identify and record appropriate map projections and accuracy measures for use by student GIS employees.
  • Prepares batches of scanned images for georeferencing based on data source, geography, map projections, and accuracy measures.
  • Georeferences scanned images according to established standards.
  • Performs quality control activities on georeferenced files produced by student staff, including confirming copyright determination.
  • Reviews and makes accessible completed batches for cataloging and geoportal ingest.
  • Coordinates georeferencing workflows and timelines with the GIS Librarian and Project Manager to ensure project deadlines are met.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Must be a graduate student; coursework in GIS preferred.
  • Previous work, internship, or educational project experience producing or manipulating geospatial data required.
  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS for Desktop, or QGIS required.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and workflow management skills required.
  • Experience manipulating and managing GIS data required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of geospatial techniques and workflows required; georeferencing experience preferred.
  • Experience working with complex databases and spreadsheets utilizing MS Excel and/or MS Access required.
  • Familiarity with Windows 10 in a PC network environment and Microsoft Office 365 required.
  • Ability to learn a range of position related software applications.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

  • Ability to use computers for 4 hours or more
