Library Paging & Pickup service and Scan & Deliver to begin June 15

UChicago Card services also to reopen in June

The University of Chicago Library is beginning to safely resume on-site operations supporting research as part of the University’s resumption of additional programs and operations on campus. In the initial phase of reopening on-site operations, we will be offering three additional services beyond those currently available online: Paging & Pickup of Library materials, Scan & Deliver, and UChicago ID Card services.

“The University of Chicago Library is dedicated to enabling research and teaching while working with community members across campus to foster a culture focused on safety and public health for patrons, staff, and the broader community,” stated Ka Yee C. Lee, Provost, and Brenda L. Johnson, Library Director and University Librarian. “We are pleased that the Library will soon be able to offer mediated services providing access to our print collections.”

Paging & Pickup of Library materials

While our spaces remain closed to patrons, beginning on June 15, the Library will offer a paging service that provides materials from Mansueto and Regenstein, with expansion to other locations when possible, to current UChicago faculty, other academic appointees, postdocs, students, and staff.  Patrons will make an appointment to pick up materials in the outer lobby of Regenstein.

Patrons will be able to request items as needed through the Library Catalog, and the Library will fill up to five requests per patron per day. Our goal is to make materials available within three business days.

To enhance the safety of this process, items will be checked out to patrons by staff before pickup. Patrons will be required to wear masks, observe social distancing, and display their ID when picking up material.

During this initial phase of minimal on-site operations, patrons will not be allowed into the stacks or anywhere beyond the outer lobby.

Items available online through the HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service will not be eligible for physical paging so that the Library can continue to provide online access.

Scan & Deliver

Beginning June 15, the Library’s Scan & Deliver service will resume, providing access to Regenstein’s circulating collections, with a limit of five items per patron per day.  Scanning of Special Collections is not available at this time. Items available online through the HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service are ineligible for Scan & Deliver.

UChicago Card services

The ID and Privileges Office in Regenstein will reopen to provide UChicago Card services to on-campus users by appointment only.

Online Library services continue

The Library continues to support teaching, research, and learning through a wide variety of online services from Ask a Librarian assistance and consultations to workshops and instruction to access to e-resources.
