Online Learning

The Library offers many ways to support teaching and learning using University of Chicago’s Canvas course management system.

Library Orientation in Canvas

The Library has created an online orientation in Canvas available to all UChicago users. Students may self-enroll and review at their own pace. The orientation provides an overview of Library services with an emphasis on online research. Additional content is available about use of specific collections and advanced research skills.

Modules from the Library’s orientation course can be customized and embedded into your own course. Assessments, such as quizzes, can also be added to assess learning. Contact Rebecca Starkey, Head of Research and Instruction Services, for more information.

Adding Library Guides to Canvas

The "University of Chicago Library" tool in Canvas displays a research guide matched automatically to your course by department or the custom guide for your course (more information below). Guides display recommended resources as well as contact information for relevant Library experts.

Learn how to turn on the tool in Canvas.

Librarians can create customized library research guides for your courses, highlighting relevant print and online resources. The Library will provide you with a URL for the guide, which can be linked from your Canvas site. Contact Ask a Librarian to request changes to the tool in your Canvas course site or request a custom guide for your course.

Online Instruction

Library instruction programs can be taught online via Zoom, recorded for asynchronous learning, or offered in a “flipped classroom” model for in-class activities.
