D'Angelo Law Library Mission Statement

The D'Angelo Law Library contributes to the academic and scholarly success of the University of Chicago and Law School communities by providing rich collections and resources, maintaining a premier scholarly environment, and delivering superior library services. In furtherance of this mission, the D'Angelo Law Library partners with the University of Chicago Library and the Law School to:

  • cultivate relationships with faculty, students, and staff,
  • build and support a vibrant intellectual community,
  • engage in learning, teaching and research in law and related disciplines,
  • preserve and enhance the scholarly record for researchers now and in the future,
  • develop and leverage the expertise of a highly talented and dedicated staff, and
  • collaborate with libraries and publishers in its stewardship of law research collections.

D'Angelo Law Library Goals, 2014-2017

  • Reexamine and redefine collection priorities based on the needs and preferences of the D'Angelo Law Library's current and future users
  • Ensure that the D'Angelo Law Library effectively and efficiently enables discovery, access and use
  • Create, deliver and promote services that support Law School student learning and preparation for legal practice
  • Create, deliver and promote services that contribute to the scholarly success of the Law School faculty
  • Create new ways of demonstrating the value of the D'Angelo Law Library
  • Develop resources and staff expertise to maintain and enhance D'Angelo's value to the Law School and University communities

D'Angelo Law Library Strategic Plan, 2014-2017

Reexamine and redefine collection priorities based on the needs and preferences of the D'Angelo Law Library's current and future users

Strategies

  1. Review, redefine and document D'Angelo collection development priorities to better serve the research and teaching needs of the University and Law School communities
  2. Cooperate and collaborate with bibliographers on campus to develop collection development policies on overlapping subject areas, geographic and area studies
  3. Consider and develop resource sharing and shared collection options beyond campus boundaries
  4. Create a collection strategy for collecting rare books and develop D'Angelo expertise in rare law book selection
  5. Rationalize D'Angelo's collection development priorities and policies with respect to looseleaf/continuously updated resource subscriptions and journal and serial subscriptions
  6. Determine policies and guidelines for collection of titles in multiple formats and revise D'Angelo Collection Development Policy accordingly
  7. Work collaboratively with the University Library, the professional library community, and publishers to preserve print and digital law materials
  8. Continue to archive and create access to the Law School's history and consider new ways to expand on and create access to it
  9. Create and/or utilize existing tools for reporting on use of collections and resources

Ensure that the D'Angelo Law Library effectively and efficiently enables discovery, access and use

Strategies

  1. Continue to participate in the development of the new Library Catalog (VuFind & KualiOLE) as an effective discovery tool for collections and information resources
  2. Evaluate current methods of discovery of D'Angelo collections and information
  3. Assess current use of D'Angelo physical spaces, consider whether the library is an effective place for research and study, and make recommendations for future improvements

Create, deliver and promote services that support Law School student learning and preparation for legal practice

Strategies

  1. Develop a programmatic approach for legal research skills development that ensures D'Angelo offerings in each year of the J.D. program
  2. Further develop offerings to support the Law School's courses and programs
  3. Reexamine the outreach and instruction offerings for the LL.M program
  4. Examine and improve current methods of communication with D'Angelo student users and develop an overall communications plan

Create, deliver and promote services that contribute to the scholarly success of the Law School faculty

Strategies

  1. Complete the development of the faculty publications database and the faculty scholarship repository, Chicago Unbound
  2. Continue to maintain and build upon relationships with and services to Law School faculty

Create new ways of demonstrating the value of the D'Angelo Law Library

Strategies

  1. Evaluate current methods and create processes for understanding use of collections and services
  2. Identify opportunities to promote and contribute D'Angelo staff expertise to Law School and University Library projects and programs

Develop resources and staff expertise to maintain and enhance D'Angelo's value to the Law School and University communities

Strategies

  1. Review D'Angelo staff processes and work assignments to evaluate and determine priorities that are core to our mission and supportive of user research, teaching and learning needs and preferences
  2. Sustain an atmosphere of respect, understanding, and knowledge of each other's work among all staff, acknowledging the interdependence of our work for all of D'Angelo's user constituencies.
  3. Ensure that staff have the knowledge and expertise to provide the collections and services needed by our users
  4. Utilize the Wright Fellowship as an opportunity to learn from and mentor newer law librarians and to develop new programs
  5. Identify new funding sources to support D'Angelo collections and programs and explore ways to pursue them
