Bayeux Tapestry

The Bayeaux Tapestry depicts the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and its aftermath. In this scene from panel eight, Harold, newly-crowned King of England, is installed on a throne surrounded by cheering subjects. The appearance of Haley’s Comet  forshadows doom; in the lower border, a fleet of ships hint at the impending Norman invasion and subsequent defeat of the English at the hands of William the Conqueror.
